We are not immune to get sad and weary at some point of our lives. It’s okay not to be okay at times, but we must be aware that prolonged sadness or lingering grief can lead to depression, and in severe cases, suicide is a possible outcome.

In the film Hope Bridge, following his father’s suicide, Jackson a high school student begins to search for the truth behind the devastating decision of his father to kill himself.  With the help of a church pastor Eric and Sophie, a pretty young lady who at one time almost committed suicide, Jackson begins a journey to find hope in the midst of his grief.  As he quests to find the answers, it only breeds more questions—feeling more hopeless.  Will he be doomed to do the same cycle, or will he decide to move forward and find hope for his future?

Finally Jackson discovers that his father had to deal with great pain that perhaps attributed to the decision he made to eventually end his life. In the midst of depression , suicide might seem very tempting and appealing idea, and this is what happened to Jackson’s father in the film Hope Bridge.  In the story, it shows that the fear to face pain is one of the disgusting reasons to end one’s life. That’s why we are instructed by the Bible not to fear and to cast our cares upon the LORD.  “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28.

When Jackson goes to the bridge where his father died, he is confronted with a dilemma.  Must he repeat the same cycle, or let go and move on?  With the help of God-fearing people and love ones around him, he makes the right choice.  Finding the truth sets him free.  “Truth will hurt you first, but then it will set you free.”  The bridge where Jackson’s  father took his own life becomes Jackson’s hope bridge.

The Hope Bridge is a compelling story where depression and suicide  is illustrated.  Depression prevents people from taking steps to help themselves—it clouds one’s vision and numbs sensitivity; that’s why we need to reach out for those people who are suffering from depression before it’s too late. With the support of family and the community, suicide can be prevented.  “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” Proverbs 12:25.

The Hope Bridge is a faith-based film that gives enlightenment to those people who are struggling with the thought of committing suicide.  Likewise, it gives healing to those who are left behind.
