7 Ways to Keep Your Wedding Vows

Marriage is a holy covenant between a man and a woman before God.   The formal exchange of your marriage vows and wedding rings and the meaning it represents is the most significant part of a wedding ceremony.

Your wedding vows are not just a collection of words you have said to one another, but they are the pledge of love between you, your spouse and God.  Though wedding vows can be short and simple, yet they serve as a reminder of your lifetime commitment with each other — whatever life throws at you along the way, you’ll spend the rest of your life together.

Here’s how to keep your wedding vows blissfully—letting your marriage grows and thrives.

1. Total Commitment

A successful marriage does not depend on mere emotions or circumstances, but its success involves unconditional love, forgiveness, patience, accepting each other’s flaws and mistakes and simply being willing to give and take. The marriage relationship isn’t perfect or flawless because two distinct and unique individuals begin a life together — disagreements, misunderstandings, conflicts, frustrations, and even resentments may arise in your marriage.  But regardless of the circumstances and feelings, your pledge of love and commitment supersede them.  “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 New International Version (NIV)

2. Open Communication

Your spouse will never know what you need if you don’t communicate. Despite conflicts and differences, keep your communication always open.  To avoid being critical or judgmental, always communicate your thoughts, ideas, plans, opinions, and perspectives –no matter what, always keep your channels of communication open.  Be honest with your feelings, pay attention to your spouse’s feelings and gestures and listen objectively.  Brainstorm ideas, but don’t let arguments turn into fights.  Also being aware or conscious with non verbal communication is critical to husband and wife relationships.

3. Total Acceptance

Your spouse has own disposition so you cannot control his/her actions at all times. Allow them to take responsibility for their actions and even your spouse gets wrong, don’t condemn him/her, but rather let them learn from their mistakes. Let there be space for creativity, me time and a degree of personal responsibility and liberty.

4. Allow to grow as individuals

Marriage is a union of two different persons, but the success of the relationship is to identify each other’s strengths and weaknesses and eagerness to change behaviors that need to be improved. Through conflicts and mistakes you both learn from each other. Don’t avoid conflicts, but resolve them together. As you grow in your union, don’t forget to pursue your personal advancement and take time to refresh yourself continually.

5. Connect with other people.

Your marriage doesn’t only revolve around your partner, but you need to invest in relationships with your families, friends, neighbors, colleagues and other significant people. As a married couple, attend Bible study together, go to church together, widen your networks and find mentors that can help you strengthen your marriage. Find a church where both of you will not only attend and worship God together, but enjoy common areas of interest like serving in a music ministry, children’s ministry, evangelism, etc. and building friendships with other couples.

6. Enjoy one another.

God aims marriage to be pleasurable and enjoyable.  Despite marriage entails many responsibilities, don’t take things too gravely, purpose to enjoy one another. Learn new things together, laugh and have some fun together. Set aside time for intimacy to maintain a happy and lasting marriage. Continue doing the romantic things you enjoyed while dating like sending flowers, love notes and greeting cards on special occasions, going to the park, watching your favorite movie, etc.

7. Pray together.

Praying together as a married couple builds trust and strengthens the bonds of intimacy in your marriage. Praying about your worries, anxieties and struggles makes you honest and humble as you share your thoughts and feelings with God and your partner. Praying together helps you get to know each other better and gives you insight on how to help and serve each other in a better way.

Your wedding vow doesn’t need to be lengthy and wordy, but it should be coming from a sincere heart, an unconditional promise of love as it becomes an awesome reminder to stay faithful and true to your marriage even during times of trials, difficulties, stress, and frustrations.
