3 Ways to Express Love and Gratitude to Your Parents

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” – I Thessalonians 5:18

Our parents are a gift from the Lord and they love and care for us unconditionally. However, as we grow older, we tend to forget that our parents are getting older too, and we should do something to make them feel loved, special and appreciated.

Here are some ways to express your love and gratitude to your parents.

1. Have a good conversation with them.

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” – Proverbs 1:8

Find some time to talk to them and have a good conversation with them. Tell them how much you love them and express your gratitude by simply saying “Thank you!” Talk about the past and their sacrifices for the family. Appreciate all their works, love and care. If you are living away from home or married, call or visit them regularly and always show that you appreciate them. Ask them how they are doing, listen to their stories, talk to them about your feelings or you can also ask for some advice.

2. Treat them with kindness and respect.

“Each of you must respect your mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God.” – Leviticus 19:3

Always treat your parents with kindness and respect. Do not talk back or mistreat your parents with your words. Talk to them with a polite and kind manner. God wants us to honor our parents and it is written in the Bible. “Honor your father and mother” – which is the first commandment with a promise – so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” – Ephesians 6:2-3 Build their trust by telling the truth and always obey them because they know what’s best for us. Don’t do the things that will upset, annoy and hurt them. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” – Ephesians 6:1

3. Give them some present or do something that can make them happy.

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” – Hebrews 13:16

Show your love and gratitude to your parents by doing something that makes them happy. Help them in house chores, cook for them and wash the laundry. You can give them some present like homemade cookies, cards, flowers, jewelry, books, skin care products, ticket for their favorite movie or a gift card to their favorite restaurant or coffee shop. Kiss or hug them and be affectionate to them.

If you make a mistake or have an argument, reconcile and apologize to each other. Spend some quality time with your parents and enjoy their company by engaging in some activities together. Greet them on their birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and other occasions. Always do your best to make them happy and include them in your prayers.
