5 Christian Ways to Give Encouragement
Everyone has a difficult situation and season in life. At some point in our lives, we need encouragement. And in other cases, we need to give encouragement for those who are discouraged. As the bible tells us in Thessalonians 5:11 to “Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as in fact you are doing.”
Here are 5 Christian ways to give encouragement.
Listen to Them
“To answer before listening– that is folly and shame.” Proverbs 18:13
I think this should be one of the traits of an encourager. You can uplift the spirit of your brothers by simply listening to them. By listening, you have the time to ask the Lord for wisdom and guidance as the person is sharing about the circumstance that he is facing right now. It is best to let them share first because sometimes the strongest encouragement is through listening.
Remind Them the Promises of God
‘’God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.’’ Psalm 46:1
There’s nothing as comforting hearing the promises of God through His word. You can make lists of Scriptures that have brought you blessing when you are in times of need. Or share with them the books that you have read during your trying times. May you find and share the blessings and grace of God with others.
Show Encouragement by Your Actions
“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26
The light of Christ cannot be hidden even in the darkest times. As Christians, our actions and attitude should be based on His Words. The Lord will equip us leading others to see the light that God is in us that their faith be strengthened. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” (Ephesians 5:8).
Understand Their Circumstance
“Their insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. If only one person would show some pity; if only one would turn and comfort me.” Psalms 69:20
Do not ignore your brothers difficulty instead understand their circumstances. Ignoring may not build them up when they are struggling. Ask the Lord to give you wisdom to give a word of encouragement. Our response should always be focused and grounded in love, mercy and hope in Christ.
Be an Encourager and Bring Glory to Him
‘’In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.’’ Matthew 5:16
All of our deeds must bring back all the glory to our Creator! Let the experiences in our lives be an example and teacher for those who are looking at us. Our ultimate goal is to be an encourager and bring glory to Him.
“Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25
Every believer should strive to be a source of encouragement for everyone that God had placed in their lives. When you give encouragement, you don’t only give encouragement to those who needs it but also to yourself.
