The Fullness of Joy
The fullness of joy is found only in God’s presence. Indeed, as the scripture says, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11
We only live once, so discovering the real purpose of our existence is very crucial to find true happiness. Consider what gives you joy and satisfaction and what brings you regret and question “what if” with certain areas of your life. Think of the reasons why are you striving for success? Think of the reasons why you pursue greater achievement and toil to increase earthly possession. Find the answer to all these questions and you will find great motivation.
Nevertheless, after you achieved all these things, do you find real happiness and satisfaction? Solomon in all his glory finds these entire things as vanity—“Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 2:11
In the film What If, contrary to Ben Walker’s original plan fifteen years ago to marry his college sweetheart (Kristy Swanson) and to become a preacher, he chose a different direction to pursue a very rewarding business opportunity.
Now (after fifteen years), Ben (Kevin Sorbo) becomes a successful executive with a high paying career, a luxury car and a trophy fiancé. He has forgotten his first love- God and Wendy. Overwhelmed with material and earthly things he didn’t consider to share his wealth with family and kids and not even think to set his foot in a church for fifteen long years.
But God in His sovereignty sent an angel named Mike (John Ratzenberger ) to allow Ben to see his alternate reality— what if he fulfills his promise to marry Wendy and follow God’s calling to be a preacher. In this what if experience, Ben finds life more fulfilling and satisfying. He discovers that true richness and the fullness of joy are found in God, faith and family.
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21
What If is a charming film for the whole family. It can be used as a tool to discuss the true meaning and value of life, success and possession.
“Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit.” Proverbs 23:4
“Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.” Luke 12:15
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-20
